Description
“Life After the Knife” is the second book written by University of Iowa Professor Emeritus and RAG4Clubfoot Co-Founder Thomas M. Cook. His first book, published in 2020, was “Clubfoot: The Quest for a Better Life for Millions of Children.” “Life After the Knife” tells the stories of individuals born with clubfoot who were treated using the Ponseti Method and those who were not, and the stark contrast between the outcomes of these two groups. The author critically examines the ethical implications of unnecessary surgeries, emphasizing the Hippocratic principle of “do no harm” and advocating for patient-centered care that prioritizes long-term function over short-term cosmetic correction. “Life After the Knife” also celebrates the grassroots movement led by informed parents, advocates, and organizations like the Ponseti International Association and NoSurgery4Clubfoot, which have propelled the method’s global dissemination. It calls for systemic change in healthcare reimbursement, education, and professional accountability to eliminate harmful surgeries and improve outcomes for children born with clubfoot worldwide.
