Since 2018, the Sarah Network of Rehabilitation Hospitals has received over 6,000 Iowa Braces from Clubfoot Solutions for their clubfoot clinics. The Sarah Network consists of nine units in Brazil. Congenital clubfoot is treated at the Centers in Belo Horizonte (MG), Brasília (DF), Salvador (BA) and São Luís (MA).
In the past, treatment was performed with numerous plaster cast changes, followed by surgeries with posteromedial release.
In 2008, the Posenti Method was introduced as one of the treatment protocols. This resulted in radical changes, as evident on the graph (below), which registers a decrease in surgeries and an increase in tenotomies.
Analysis of the Treatment of Clubfoot
Today, there is a growing number of new admissions, from 483 cases in 2018, to 531 in 2019 and 508 in 2020, reflecting broad access to the treatment. In 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sarah Network continued to provide treatment and consultation services via remote delivery, wherein the practitioner accessed the patient through video or telemedicine. This development is of great relevance because the use of orthoses is essential to sustaining correction during the maintenance phase.
